Blackpool libraries are committed to helping people of all ages to enjoy the experience of reading. To this end a lot of time and thought is put into the stock that is chosen, the events that are held and the training the staff receive.
Being a small authority with a small budget has not hindered the desire to reach out to as many people as possible and to attract them through the library's doors. There is a very full year plan of activities and promotions for young and old alike. Not only are the national promotions such as "The Orange Prize, "The Man Booker Prize", "World Book Day" and the "Summer Reading Challenge" (to name but a few) supported, but local talent is also encouraged. This year several North West authors have visited our libraries and it has been interesting to meet them and hear them speak.
Local writers meet in the library, as do some poetry groups. There are reading groups held at several of the libraries and these usually meet monthly. All libraries hold regular "Chatterbooks" sessions for young people and this year Darth Vader made an appearance at one of these meetings!
There are frequent displays in all service points and stock is kept up- to - date and attractive. Many staff have under taken reader development training and this has resulted in them being more willing to talk about books to readers.
