Salford Library service is committed to helping residents within the local area develop a love of reading for pleasure and to improving literacy skills through Reader Development work.

Salford has 16 branch libraries spread throughout the City, as well as running a successful books at home service. A number of these branches are currently being totally transformed via new state of the art buildings. Others are undergoing extensive refurbishment. It is therefore a very exciting time for Salford's library service.

A number of branches hold regular reading groups for adults as well as 'Chatterbooks' sessions for younger people.

Salford is committed to Reader Development and in addition to employing a Reader Development Officer, many of the library staff have been trained in basic reader development principles and practices.

Salford takes part annually in national reading promotions such as World Book Day and The Summer Reading Challenge as well as locally organised initiatives such as the Queer up North festival and The Salford Children's Book Award facilitated by The Schools' Library Service.

The service produces a reader development newsletter twice a year and is currently in the process of developing the 'Readers and reading Groups' section of its website.

A number of exciting author events and family days are planned for Salford in 2007. Keep checking the website for further details.
