Knowsley takes an active role in the development of literacy skills and lifelong learning, and as part of this important work, we instituted an Annual Creative Writing Competition. This provides a vehicle for the borough's residents and community groups to get involved in developing their creative writing skills.

The competition is now in it's third year and attracts entries from individuals, schools and of course our own Creative Writing Group, which meets weekly at Page Moss Library. Anyone who lives, works or studies in Knowsley or is a member of Knowsley Libraries can send in their short stories or poetry. There are entries in poetry and prose sections and categories for adults, twelve years and under and thirteen to seventeen.

Everyone who submits an entry is given the option to have his or her work proofread before it is publicised. This year we have had successful entrants from both the U3A Writing group and The Page Moss Library Creative Writing Group.

Alison Chisholm who has judged this year's entries teaches creative writing and the craft of writing poetry for Southport College, and has written three text books on writing. Steve Gallagher, Knowsley's Chief Executive also came along and praised the high standard of the work.

The prizes were awarded in Kirkby Gallery with the backdrop of an exhibition of Picasso's etchings. The entries were on display in the Gallery for several days. The short stories and poetry were also printed in a booklet which is be available in all Knowsley Libraries and on the Libraries' website:
