Reading Comes Alive - Stockport Library and Information Service

Early this year we were approached by the management of Merseyway Shopping Centre in Stockport about the possibility of working on a project with them which would have real benefits for us all. Their aim was to increase footfall at the shopping centre for the last two weeks in August and they wanted to achieve this by attracting families to reading events and activities. They had some great ideas about storytelling events in stores and were seeking partners with the contacts and expertise to help them achieve this.
We were eager to work with them, as it gave us a fantastic opportunity to have a positive public library presence right in the centre of Stockport. We were keen to reach those who had never been into a library before as well as those who were lapsed users and, of course, we wanted to promote reading to all ages.
The project became known as "Reading Comes Alive" and a marquee, banners, safe storage and facilities for staff were provided by Merseyway, they also liaised with various stores. Our School Library Service organised the story telling sessions with authors such as Craig Bradley, Lynne Chapman, Julia Jarman and Hazel Townson. They performed their work in the likes of BHS, Waterstones, Debenhams and W.H Smiths. We had some very positive feedback from them with several expressed an interest in taking part again next year

The marquee was staffed by all levels of library workers on a voluntary basis and although this fortnight was in peak holiday time, we had very few problems in attracting our staff to the venture. Our Librarians-in- Charge were extremely supportive in adjusting timetables to allow those staff who had volunteered, the opportunity to come down and help out.
We were able to set up the marquee as a "Reading Zone" which housed a small story corner, a collection of books for ages 0-12 and a drawing/colouring area where children could enter a "Design a book cover" competition. There were opportunities to join the library, borrow books, sign up for the Reading Mission and for those who were eligible, pick up free book packs from the Bookstart scheme. Visitors of all ages could find out about their local library and what we have to offer as a public library and information service. Staff commented on the experience as encouraging and rewarding.
The results for all of the partners have been tangible. Merseyway surpassed the increase in footfall target they'd set and we have been able to raise the profile of public libraries, not only in Stockport , but much further a field as we spoke to visitors from Cheshire, Derbyshire and Lancashire. We gained a number of new library members and were able to promote the Reading Mission to a wider group of children. A really worthwhile experience we will certainly be repeating.
