Oldham Literature Festival 2008

This year's busy Literature Festival saw ten events happening across the whole of October. We got off to a great start with a sell out show from Mike Gayle at Chadderton Library to celebrate his latest novel The Life and Soul of the Party.
Other successes included Stella Duffy in Saddleworth, an encouraging new Readers' Night and a one-off workshop and performance as part of the Some Girls' Mothers collaborative tour.
Black History Month

We've just finished celebrating Black History month with the help of comedian and author Julian Daniels. Julian took part in a Caribbean Cocktail event alongside the Blue Bells Steel Band at Oldham Library, before returning to the Borough to perform at a Love and Laughter night at Failsworth Library later in the month.
National Year of Reading
National Year of Reading is reaching fever pitch as we launch Extreme Reads. All our librarians are busy taking photographs of people reading in unusual or bizarre locations. Take a look at our Executive Director of Adult and Community Services doing an extreme read on her bike!
One Read
Building on the success of National Year of Reading, Oldham will be promoting One Read, a mass reading event on 1 December. We're asking everyone in Oldham to read something for ten minutes from 1pm. It doesn't matter if it's fiction, newspapers, internet blogs, audio books or snippets from the gossip columns as all forms of reading count! We'll be giving away short story books and people can click on our website for inspirational ideas.
Big Science Read Event
We're delighted to be hosting distinguished scientist Michael Boulter at Failsworth Library on Wednesday 19 November. As part of the Big Science Read campaign Michael will be talking about his latest book Darwin's Garden and giving an insight into one of England's greatest thinkers.
