News from library authorities:
CHESHIRE EAST
Mr MacGregor and the Bell Jar
An evening of "filth" was promised by Jo Bell and at Knutsford Library an audience of over thirty people were entranced by poetry, tips and anecdotes from the former Cheshire Poet Laureate, who was joined by Tatton Park's Head Gardener, Sam Youd, who when not corresponding with HRH Prince of Wales enjoys reading seed catalogues in bed! Useful hints such as "seedlings like gardeners respond best to gentle stroking in the morning" were interspersed with thought provoking and sensual poetry from worm charming and slugs to Jo on friendship, a gift of "blue bells and ginger beer".
Gardens were the theme of the evening as part of Change4Life and we heard stories of former garden boys' subterranean and secretive existence (out of sight and mind of their employers), servants murdered for prized pineapples worth £5000 and Jo Bell's canal garden -narrow but thousands of miles in length! Sam told us why we should never eat grapes in an English Country house (it's the garden boys again!) and rhubarb appears to be a general cure all but apparently it's at its best when the juice is mixed with vodka or champagne.
Two new groups have now been formed at Knutsford; BookClub@Knutsford and Knutsford Library Family History Group. The history group will meet quarterly and the book club will meet monthly. Both groups have got off to a flying start with quite a number of people interested.
We had a lovely visit with a local Brownie pack and signed up five new members as a result.
A little while ago one of our ninety (approx) year old borrowers requested some information about a Bernard Cornwall biography. Karen, a staff member, helped to find the Bernard Cornwell website and helped the borrower to send an e-mail requesting information. The borrower returned to the library highly delighted. She has had a lovely surprise as she had received a complementary signed copy of his biography all the way from America. She was absolutely thrilled.
