News from library authorities:
CHESHIRE WEST AND CHESTER

As part of the Reading Places promotion we have recently had two visits from author Caroline Smailes, one to Ellesmere Port in October and more recently to Sandiway in November. Caroline has written several books, but the focus of her talks on this occasion was the book Like Bees to Honey. The book is set on the island of Malta and was inspired by Caroline's grandparents who met and fell in love shortly after the war; her grandfather was a pilot in the RAF and her grandmother, from a wealthy Maltese family, was a map plotter. They fell in love after the many times they talked to each other on the two way radio. Her mother was banished by her Maltese family when she told them she wanted to marry an Englishman and they moved to Newcastle.
Caroline's book is the story of a young mother who was also banished from her home country of Malta after she became pregnant at university in England and the book charts her emotional return. The novel evokes the folklore/tradition/superstition and the strong catholic faith of the island. Caroline's talk generated lots of interest and questions and we look forward to her returning to Helsby Library in February for National Libraries day.
