HALTON
Face-'Book' your opinions on library revamp
A Halton library has set up its own group on leading social networking site Facebook - to get people's opinion on how it should spend its £1.3 million Lottery grant. Halton Lea in Runcorn is also encouraging readers to share experiences and chat to each other on the site. There are pictures of the venue as well as photos of staff! The grant will completely transform the service at Halton Lea Library, in Runcorn, allowing the library to offer a wider range of activities and services to the whole of the community. The cash boost was announced in October, the year Halton Borough Council's Library Service celebrated a satisfaction rating of 97 per cent - the joint highest of any authority in England. In February the area's libraries were celebrating after being awarded a share of £135,000 in Lottery grants for a young people's volunteer programme and a 'book bar'.

It is envisaged the new grant will allow the building will be redesigned to create a more accessible and flexible space for learning and reading activities and a welcoming community space that meets the needs of everyone. This will provide a 21st century library that is fit for purpose and meets the aspirations and needs of the local community. The public will be widely consulted to discover what they want from their local library. A broad range of learning, reading and community activities will be offered in an informal, inviting setting making the library a focal point for the people of Runcorn.
With a new layout it will be possible to provide a creche, practical and creative learning experiences and increased public floor space for community events and relocated counters will mean greater availability of staff throughout the building to assist customers with the use of the service.
