Creativity and Well-being:Using imaginative and creative writing activities for improved mental health
Bridge 5 Mill, Manchester 17th July 2008 (12.30-4.30 approx)
There are direct links between a sense of well-being and creativity: being able to explore and celebrate imagination and memory, to express (or find) a truth in a line of poetry, and to appreciate how working to a form inspires writers to use words with care and thoughtfulness - these inspire, comfort and stimulate us, and improve our communication with one another.
John Duffy, a founder member of Huddersfield's Albert Poets, has been running writing groups formally, informally, co-operatively or autocratically for about 15 years, in a variety of places but particularly in libraries. He is employed by Kirklees Libraries as a bibliotherapist and organises readers' and writers' groups for people affected by stress, depression or anxiety.
In the workshop, he will be offering people opportunities for imaginative and expressive writing exercises, discussion about this process and how it can be used, and a description of his work in mental health.
Cost: £50
