Readers' Groups Made Simple
Breaking the ice
Group members need to get to know each other's reading tastes a little. Ask people to discuss any or all of the following: you will find conversation starts to flow really easily.
- When people read
- Where they read
- What they read
- Do they read more than one book at a time?
- A favourite book from childhood
- A book, story or poem they have enjoyed recently
- How do you choose what to read next?
- Do you re-read old favourites?
- What book would you take to a desert island? What is your favourite book of all time?
- Bring up to 10 books. Are the covers appealing or not?
- First Lines from books. Do they make you want to read more? Or do they put you off completely? Why?
- Who was the first character in a book you fell in love with?
- Who's the character you love to hate?
- Would you ever read the last page to find out the conclusion whilst half way through a book?
- Is there one book you have always meant to read and never got round to?
- What kind of books do you tend to avoid?
- Can you think of any books that have really disappointed you and why?
- Does any book evoke a special place or time in your life
