This Slavery - Nicola Wilson Talks About Ethel Carnie Holdsworth’s Landmark Novel
Ethel Carnie Holdsworth worked in Lancashire cotton mills from the age of 11 until her early 20s when she embarked on a new career as a radical writer and campaigner for social justice. She wrote 10 novels and is believed to be the first working class woman to do so. This Slavery, published in 1925, is her best known work and has been described as a radical tale of love, loss, poverty and politics. It follows the experiences of 2 mill girls whose lives are thrown into turmoil when a fire at the mill leaves them unemployed. Nicola Wilson will explore the work and legacy of this important writer.
