Before you start reading you may want to watch this moving short film called Middleton Remembers, created by people from Langley, a district of Middleton  (Rochdale) with help from local poet Tony Walsh aka "Longfella". It seems to capture beautifully the purpose of commemorating the anniversary of the First World War- that individual sacrifice and suffering should not be forgotten.
